right so i was trying to learn Chase the jojo part 4 opening and i've gone at it a few times over the like 7 years since i heard it
left hand palm muting sucks to learn much more than right hand muting ever did due to the small fact that you're supposed to be playing notes with that hand too. you don't get the full "i don't fucken care imma smash this riff" feeling that Chase has in its soul if you try and plink away at the individual notes, but it ironically requires a lot more thought to play single notes while muting all the other strings on the guitar at the same time. if you don't mute the notes enough the open notes ring out and it sounds tonally muddy but if you press even slightly too hard or don't mute between the frets and instead mute on the fret you get a buzzy half real note, but also also if you only mute with one finger you get harmonics on the 12th 7th 5th 4.5th etc.. for a punky song that sounds like it just don't care (TM) you have to put an awful lot of care into where your fingors go.
the covers i've seen of this song also all look much more effortless with the finger placement so maybe i'm overthinking but i haven't been able to play it as faithfully as i would like to
i see people thumb muting as well on this, the style of playing seems like it might lend itself more to that. maybe i learn more similar songs in the same genre, suspended 4th comes to mind but it also has some funk derivations as well
